Privacy policy

We do not collect your address.

Effective October 28, 2026

Little Manila Rising runs this site so the public can see how the place we live affects our health. You should be able to use it without giving up your privacy. This policy explains exactly what happens to the information you enter.

The short version

What happens when you enter an address

  1. Your browser sends the address to our server. It travels in the body of an encrypted (HTTPS) request, not in the web address, so it does not appear in our server's logs.
  2. Our server passes the address to the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder, a free public service. The Census Bureau returns the census tract (a neighborhood of about 4,000 people) where that address sits.
  3. Our server sends the census tract back to your browser, which looks up the public health data for that tract.

Our server holds the address in memory only for the moment it takes to complete this lookup. It never writes the address to a file, database or log. Once the lookup is finished, we no longer have it.

The U.S. Census Bureau receives the address to perform the lookup. Its handling of that information is covered by the Census Bureau's privacy policy. We send the Census Bureau only the address. We do not send your IP address or any other information about you.

What happens when you enter a ZIP code

ZIP code lookups happen entirely in your browser, using data files downloaded from our site. The ZIP code is added to the page's web address (for example, ?zip=95206) so you can share your result. That means it may appear in your browser history and in our server's standard access logs, described below.

Standard server logs

Like nearly every website, our web host (Hostinger) automatically keeps basic access logs for security and to keep the site running. These logs record your IP address, the date and time, the pages and files you requested, and your browser type. They do not include any address you enter. We do not use these logs to identify visitors, and we do not combine them with any other information.

No third-party tracking

This site loads no outside advertising, social media or analytics scripts. Our fonts, images and data are served from our own server, so viewing the site does not send your information to Google or other font or content providers. The only outside service involved is the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder, and only when you search by address.

Children

This site does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Links to other sites

We link to data sources and other organizations. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them.

Changes to this policy

If we change how this site handles information, we will update this page and its effective date. We will not start collecting addresses without clearly saying so here first.
